PS: For the record, my lucky penny count for July was 18 pennies and 1 nickle...and the month isn't quite over yet!

| I'm back in Nova Scotia for the summer to do season two of French Food at Home. I love it here: the air is fresh, you can smell the ocean, it's very laid-back and leafy – great place to shoot. Last year, I ended up making a hobby of finding lucky pennies; they're all over the streets of Halifax for some reason. I've already started this year's collection (and I'm at the rate of a penny a day!), so I'll let you know how many I have by the end of my stay. Besides that little pursuit, this year I am determined to find all the best places to eat in Halifax. I have four favourites so far. Two are old-style diners, kind of rickity with good, cheap food and nice people serving. I love them for weekend breakfasts. They are: Cosy Snack Bar (6411 Liverpool Street, 455-5119) and Johnny's Snack Bar (6204 Almond, 454-8154). The best actual restaurants I've eaten in here (over a two year period, by the way) are Jane's on the common (2394 Robie, 431-5683) and Elephant's Eye Decor and Café (1727 Barrington, 420-1225). The food in both places is simple, tasty, interesting, and never overdone. (I think, coincidentally, that the chefs in both places are women.) The only disappointment is that their ambiance is better suited to lunch than dinner. So, that leaves me still trying to find a place to eat at night where the food and the atmosphere are equally appealing. The search is on and I'll keep you posted! À bientôt, |
