Pie Bird
I was having dinner at my friend Jennifer McLagan's a few weeks ago, she of the wonderful cookbooks Bones and Fat. The main course was a delicious meat pie with a lard crust, made all the more charming by the "pie bird" poking its little head through the golden crust.
Pie birds are porcelain with a hole from the bottom out through the beak to let steam escape during baking. I immediately raced out to buy one of my own. I could only find white, but it will do until a find a black replacement -- black to match the nursery rhyme, of course.
