Cachou – Lajaunie Licorice Bonbons

These itty bitty, jet-black "mints" with the flavour of unsweetened liquorice were created in 1880 by a French pharmacist called Léon LaJaunie, and, lucky for us, they are still on the market. They leave a wonderfully clean taste in the mouth (and, in my experience, also take the edge off appetite - handy if you can't make lunch until late), and they are chic as anything. The bonbons themselves are smaller than lentils (only they're square) and they come scattering out the side of a slim, round, yellow and black tin, no bigger than the cap on a bottle of milk (how handbag friendly is that?). Don't let the teeny size of cachous deceive you: they are potent, so you need only one on your tongue at a time. mmmmm...
