The Calder-family Christmas breakfast has always been grapefruit. This may make me sound very vintage, but when I was young it was still a big deal to get good citrus fruit and winter was the time you got it. We'd order a crate each of oranges and grapefruit every Christmas and it felt like a real event! Those were the days, too, when grapefruit was actually bitter, so that as children we always had to eat them with honey. I wish they still were that way: it makes me insane that fruits and vegetables are being bred with so much sugar now. But, that's another story. This is about grapefruit spoons! What marvellous things. I adore grapefruit, but I do not adore cutting out the sections with a knife, especially not when it has to be done for several people. The answer is these tiny spoons with their saw-tooth edges all around the tip. They get right in there and scoop out the fruit effortlessly. The Christmas breakfast table is definitely getting these this year.
