The Long-Winded Lady
I am constantly buying books for their covers, and thank goodness because I make some great discoveries that way. The Long-Winded Lady by the late Maeve Brennan is a collection of her essays in the New Yorker in the 50s. She writes in the most engagingly meandering way, leading you through the streets of New York and showing how to find delight and intrigue in the most banal of corners, the blandest of people, and the most insignificant of happenings. It was one of my top winter reads this year, so much so that I've bought at least 5 copies since and given them away.
